Policosanols - A promise not yet fully realized

A number of human and animal studies have pointed to policosanols as a way to improve blood lipid health, lowering cholesterol and improving heart health.

Policosanols used for dietary supplementation are generally a mixture of long-chain primary aliphatic fatty alcohols. These alcohols are distributed throughout nature and are derived from the waxy parts of plants like sugar cane, rice bran, wheat bran, and green vegetables. They range from C-20 to C-34 fatty alcohols with the main long-chain alcohol being the 28 carbon octacosanol. Policosanols in nature are micro- or mono-layered and often naturally ‘nanodispersed’.

As human supplements, policosanols have traditionally been available as waxy solids milled to globular powder form and formulated into capsules or tablets. For globular forms of policosanols, it is unlikely that there is systemic absorption after ingestion. It is unknown exactly how policosanols function to provide the reported effects on blood lipids. While policosanols have shown some promise for improving lipid health in a number of human trials, the previously employed physical forms reduce their potential for being biofunctional.
